Ni-Van Singers at Paynesville UCA
On Sunday 9th November, Paynesville welcomed Wendy Flahive of Johnsonville Congregation who gave us insight into the UC Pacific Islands Ministry which she has undertaken for many years now. Wendy told of her trip to Solomon Islands where she was able to distribute birthing kits to aid the local women to prevent cross infection during childbirth, but also to introduce the concept of accessing birthing kits for the future.
Wendy also brought along an apron which she has made in Australia to assist in teaching women sexual education. It shows the birthing canal and the baby within it, and Wendy is looking for sewers to assist in making the aprons for her next visit to the Pacific. Whilst there, Wendy trains other women in sexual education plus also seeks grants for public speakers to assist the women to teach and train others in the future.
Eight seasonal workers from Vanuatu joined in the service singing two songs: God’s Love and Revival. Their singing was inspirational and was greeted with loud acclaim at the conclusion. One of their group spoke to us of working in Australia and how it enables him to send his 5 children to primary and secondary schools so that they might receive an education. He also explained that the capital, Porta Villa was still flat after the earthquake last year, and that it will be many years before it is re-established.
They joined us for a hearty lunch at the conclusion of the service, and we allowed them access to the Op Shop, as it is difficult for them to shop for necessities due to the long hours which many of them put in. We look forward to a Christmas Lunch with the Ni-Van workers during December, and hopefully more of their wonderful singing.
